How to choose and enjoy a Châteauneuf-du-Pape at home

Châteauneuf-du-Pape comes in many styles depending on the estate, colour, blend and vintage. Start with the occasion and your own tastes rather than relying on a single criterion.

Red or white?

Red Châteauneuf-du-Pape works well with roast meats, slow-cooked dishes, game and mature cheeses. Whites pair naturally with fish, seafood, poultry and Mediterranean cuisine.

The role of the vintage

The vintage is useful information, but the estate, cuvée style, storage conditions and evolution of the wine matter too. For an older bottle, reliable provenance and storage are especially important.

Serving temperature

  • Red: around 16–18°C.
  • White: around 10–12°C, depending on style.

Should you decant it?

A young, structured red may benefit from 30 to 60 minutes of aeration. With an older wine, handle it more gently and avoid vigorous decanting.

Storing bottles at home

Keep bottles away from light and at as stable a temperature as possible. Bottles sealed with natural cork and intended for longer ageing are generally stored on their side.
